A critical skill set in creating an ethical, welcoming and inclusive workplace is the ability of all of us to recognize when challenging and harmful situations arise, and to respond appropriately to minimize harm. We offer Bystander Intervention and Difficult Conversations training to employees four times a year to help our staff stand up for themselves and their colleagues in tough situations.
This course explores the barriers that prevent us from intervening in difficult situations and teaches tools, skills, and techniques to speak up effectively in the moment and/or in the aftermath. We teach the 5 Ds of Bystander Intervention that offer multiple options for intervening, a model for difficult conversations, and we practice effective ways to have these conversations with supervisors, peers, and direct reports. No prior experience is needed, and all employees are welcome and encouraged to join.
Employees can register on Workday when the course is open or contact odei@ucar.edu for more information.
Evaluation for this course is underway and will be published when available.
