UCAR

UCAR offers comprehensive training for our supervisors and leaders, to help them effectively lead their teams and the organization. Both Legal Fundamentals, and LEAD training are required for all new supervisors, and strongly recommended for those in existing supervisory or leadership roles. Supervisors are welcome to retake LEAD at any time. Alumni of these trainings are provided additional support through Leadership Circles that meet bimonthly to discuss ongoing professional development and peer advice and support. All supervisors, regardless of trainings taken, are welcome to join Supervisor Forums, which provide practical updates to supervisors about specific topics.

LEAD TEAM trainings are a cross-collaboration between the Office of General Council, Office of Access, Culture, and Opportunity, and Talent and Learning Development. If you have any questions about these trainings, please contact tld@ucar.edu.

Legal Fundamentals for Supervisors

Legal Primer for Supervisors: This interactive program is designed to give supervisors a high-level understanding of their roles, responsibilities, and legal duties, as well as how to spot and address legal issues throughout the life cycle of an employee (hiring, performance management, end of employment). Participants learn about various legal aspects of their role, including harassment, discrimination, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family Medical Leave Act, wage and hour laws, workplace safety, and much more.

This orientation is required for all new supervisors and is highly recommended for current supervisors or anyone interested in exploring advancement to a supervisory role. For questions, please contact tld@ucar.edu.

Leadership, Exploration and Development (LEAD)

Fundamental Skills for Supervisors: LEAD helps supervisors further develop fundamental concepts, tools, and skills. The program can be taken as an intensive course or as standalone modules to provide maximum flexibility for employees’ schedules. All modules must be taken with 18 months for LEAD to be considered complete. LEAD comprises 6 modules of 2-4 sessions each, with interactive teaching methods and peer support that enhance group learning and mentoring. There are also assignments between sessions to help participants put new ideas and strategies into action.

LEAD is required for all supervisors hired or promoted after January 1, 2023 and is highly encouraged for anyone in an existing supervisory role.

Leadership Academy

Going Beyond: UCAR's Leadership Academy is an intensive program for a cohort of 30 staff members from across the organization who are in, may soon find themselves in, or have an interest in mid-level leadership and management positions and above. Designed to strengthen leadership skills, the program includes workshops, seminars, small-group projects, and personal coaching and mentoring provided by both UCAR staff and outside consultants. The program takes place annually over seven months, from February to September.

UCAR’s Leadership Academy key goals and objectives:

  1. Provide next-level leadership development training to include concepts, best practices, coaching, and mentoring.
  2. Prepare supervisors and managers for greater leadership responsibilities within the organization.
  3. Learn what it means to be an ethical, welcoming, and supportive leader.
  4. Develop peer cohorts that provide greater integration across labs and programs.
  5. Expand virtual learning skills, while advancing in leadership development.

These objectives are achieved through a variety of activities including virtual training, special projects, reading assignments, coaching, self-assessment, and other activities. Participants are supported in their endeavors by training experts, both internal and external, and by an assigned mentor(s) from prior UCAR Leadership Academy programs.
