UCAR’s DEI work is overseen by the Office of DEI, based in UCAR’s President’s Office. ODEI sets the strategic direction for DEI for the organization as a whole and facilitates major organization-wide initiatives such as the Workplace Culture Survey. ODEI provides in-depth support for many other UCAR-wide initiatives such as Scientific Appointment Modernization (SAM), Our Future Our Space (OFOS), Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), new policies and procedures, and professional development opportunities and trainings. We also partner closely with over-arching departments such as HR and Facilities.
NSF NCAR DEI is located in the NCAR Directors Office, reporting directly to the NSF NCAR Director, with a dotted line of reporting to ODEI. NSF NCAR DEI oversees the Minority Serving Institution science and education partnerships, teaching exchanges, the Rising Voices Center for Indigenous and Earth Sciences, work on Indigenous data sovereignty, and provides close support to scientists with DEI-related components to their projects. NSF NCAR DEI also provides the NSF NCAR labs with day-to-day support on DEI-related programs and concerns and supports the Lab DEI Committees in partnership with ODEI.
UCP has a DEI Liaison, positioned in the UCP Directorate. The liaison works closely with the UCP Director and the Program Directors to support their DEI initiatives and provide advice and counsel when needed. The Liaison also supports the UCP DEI committees in partnership with ODEI.
While we have described the general structure of responsibility above, all three groups partner incredibly closely to ensure that we are all on the same page and all providing support to employees where necessary. Any employee can approach any of the three groups for assistance and be guided to the right point of contact for their needs.
In addition to these dedicated groups, UCAR has a plethora of other employees working to support our DEI goals. These include the LPO-based DEI committees, the ERGs, alumni of our training programs, and individuals working in individual departments such as HR to improve the work environment and culture for all our staff.
